Update a Shopify CSV without wiping fields by accident

A short safety checklist for product updates, variants, and inventory before you click Import.

The risky distinction: when “Overwrite products with matching handles” is on, a column included in your CSV can overwrite the matching product field. A blank value in an included non-required column can clear the old value; a column omitted from the CSV is left unchanged.

Before you edit

Export the current product data and keep that original untouched. Make a separate working copy.
Decide exactly which fields you intend to change. Keep the current Shopify headers and include only the columns needed for that update.
Check every blank cell in every included column. If overwrite is enabled, a blank may replace existing data with blank.

Protect variants

If you update a variant field such as SKU or weight, Shopify says the related option columns may also be required. Omitting the option name/value columns when they are needed can create a default variant and remove existing variants. Changing option values can also create new variant IDs.

Practical check: compare the working file’s handles and option columns against the export before importing. Don’t remove a column just because you aren’t directly editing it until you’ve checked Shopify’s dependency rules.

Keep inventory updates separate when needed

The product CSV’s “Inventory quantity” column is for single-location stores. For multiple locations, Shopify directs merchants to use an inventory CSV. Export the inventory format you need first; Shopify’s “All states” export includes more protection against accidental overwrites than the simpler “Available” format.

Final pre-import checklist

Save as UTF-8 and keep Shopify’s exact column headers.
Confirm each product handle and variant option combination identifies the intended row.
Review blank cells in columns that are present, plus any fields related to changed variant data.
Use Shopify’s import preview and read the summary before starting the import.
Keep the export and the final import file so you can compare what changed.
